Ligament Injuries

Ligaments are dense, collagenous connective tissue, or cartilage, that connects bone to bone at the joint. They have an elastic nature to provide flexibility while stabilizing joints by strengthening the articular capsule.

Injury results from overstretching, twisting or tearing of a ligament. The most common areas for these types of injuries are the knee, ankle, and shoulder, but can also occur at the various joints throughout the body.

Individuals that experience ligament tears commonly report a loud pop or snapping sound. They may experience bruising, swelling, pain and pressure at the site of the injury. Ligament overstretching can cause weakness or instability in the joint.
